Dwight Ritter Wins $1.5 Million Judgment for Client

Dwight Ritter recently won a $1.5 million judgment for his client, Kimberli Hirst, in a sexual harassment case against the Oceanside Police Department. Hirst worked as a phlebotomist for the Department. Between October of 2008 and October of 2009, she was subjected to a series of sexual comments and propositions by officer Gil Garcia, who often worked alone with Hirst in a locked room, according to Ritter.

The jury’s decision in the case apportioned 75% of the blame for the harassment to the city of Oceanside, and 25% to Garcia himself. This is due to the fact that Hirst claims that the police department should have prevented retaliation from Garcia against Hirst once the investigation commenced. Additionally, the department was aware of Garcia’s problem, and should have taken action to prevent this behavior from affecting Hirst.
