Pedestrian hit in San Diego accident

On Monday night, an intoxicated driver was attempting to reverse in an apartment parking lot when he struck a pedestrian in the area.

The 48-year-old man was in a North Park underground parking lot trying to back his Corvette into a designated spot. The accident occurred around 6:15 p.m. when the man accelerated instead of pushing on his brake, and hit a 72-year-old woman.

The woman suffered a broken leg as a result of the collision. She was trying to unlock her storage unit when the car ran into her. Police suspected that the man was under the influence of alcohol, and he was subsequently arrested for a felony DUI. He is still residing in the San Diego county jail.

San Diego top city for DUIs for a second year

For the second year in a row, San Diego has been ranked the number one city in the country with the highest percentage of drunk driving citations. Three California cities are in the top five: San Diego (1), Los Angeles (2), and San Francisco (5).

The data was collected by Insurance.com between November 1, 2010 and October 31, 2011. Researchers say that some cities top the list not because there are more heavy drinkers, but for numerous reasons such as a lack of public transportation and law enforcement patrolling more frequently.

In 2009, a third of all car accident fatalities, about 11,000, were caused by drivers with blood alcohol levels at or above 0.08.
