City to pay woman who was sexually assaulted by police officer

A woman who was sexually assaulted by an 18-year veteran of the San Diego police department will receive $675,000 from the city of San Diego, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported last week. The alleged assault occurred two years ago in the Gaslamp District when the officer pulled over a woman on suspected drunk driving. According to the woman, the officer touched her inappropriately, made crude sexual remarks, and said he would let her go if she flashed him and let him touch her.

The woman then filed a complaint with the city, but it was denied because it was made more than six months after the incident. She then went to the San Diego Superior Court with her complaint and was granted a case on the basis of civil rights violations, false imprisonment, and sexual assault.

Several alleged victims of the officer have come forward claiming he sexually assaulted them and testified at his criminal trial. The 41 year-old was sentenced to eight years and eight months in prison for numerous felonies, including bribery and assault. He was released from the force before the trial.

If you or someone you love has been the victim of sexual assault, you do not have to live in shame or embarrassment. Filing a lawsuit against the guilty party can bring them to justice and get you the compensation you deserve.
