Cable car accidents costing city of San Francisco millions
About once a month, San Francisco residents are faced with the news of another cable car accident.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, cable cars are regarded as among the most accident-prone forms of mass transportation in the country per vehicle mile traveled annually, with San Francisco city officials reporting 126 accidents that caused injury to 151 people over the last 10 years.
Just this March, a cable car ran into trouble on the track, causing it to stop suddenly and harming five passengers and two workers inside the car.
A report obtained by the Associated Press listing the cable car-related settlements made over the last three years revealed that the city paid nearly $8 million to settle around four dozen claims.
