The SUV was sent spinning out of control and into the center divider.  The vehicle flipped over the railing and rolled at least once.  At least one of the vehicle’s passengers was trapped inside after the accident.

Fall protection rules extended to residential builders

This month, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced that they are extending fall protection rules once concerned only with commercial construction to residential construction projects as well.

Just before this announcement, the federal agency released their annual list of the top 10 safety violations they encountered in 2010.  Number 1 on the list of violations was fall protection violations.

Last year, OSHA issued 7,139 citations to employers for not providing the proper fall protection for employees.  260 workers died from elevated falls in 2010.  According to OSHA, about 29 percent of the fatalities were in residential projects.

Now, residential construction contractors are expected to follow the same regulations that are enforced in commercial construction projects.  These regulations include implementing safety net systems, personal fall arrest systems, and guardrail systems.

Father and son die in separate accidents on Interstate 8

Last Thursday, a father and son were tragically killed in two separate accidents on Interstate 8.

The 16-year old son was involved in an accident on the highway at around 7 a.m. near Alpine.  The teen was riding in a vehicle driven by his mother.  For an unknown reason, the mother lost control of the vehicle, swerving off of the roadway.

The vehicle flipped and the 16-year old was ejected.  Paramedics pronounced the boy dead at the scene of the accident.  Investigators believe that the mother’s vehicle may have experienced a tire defect.

Just hours after hearing the news of his son’s death, the teen’s father was involved in a wrong-way accident on I-8.  According to the California Highway Patrol, the second accident occurred at around 1:15 p.m. near Tavern Road.  The father’s vehicle was witnessed driving erratically, westbound in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Tavern Road before colliding head-on with another vehicle.

The father was flown to a nearby hospital where he later passed away.  Another father and son were in the vehicle that the father struck head-on in the second accident and were treated for moderate injuries at Sharp Memorial Hospital.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ family during this difficult time.

Jury upholds $10 million slip and fall verdict against Walmart

This week, a $10 million slip and fall verdict against Walmart was upheld by the Colorado State Supreme Court.  The verdict is considered to be one of the largest verdicts in a slip and fall lawsuit in the history of the U.S.

The case involved a 41-year old woman who slipped on a pile of grease in the parking lot at a Walmart store in December 2007.  The woman worked as truck driver and slipped while making a delivery at the store.

After the accident, the victim was no longer able to work as a truck driver because of her injuries; she had 3 spinals surgeries and incurred $500,000 worth of medical bills.

The verdict was awarded last year, but Walmart appealed the ruling.  The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal and upheld the $10 million award.
