Hundreds of Cruise Ship Passengers Sick in San Diego

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 100 passengers on a Celebrity Infinity cruise ship that arrived home in San Diego last week are complaining of symptoms like nausea and vomiting, according to the LA Times on April 14.

The cruise ship departed on March 29th to travel around the Mexican Riviera. The cause of the illness is unknown, but after a thorough cleaning and inspection by health officials, it is suspected that norovirus is to blame.

This ship was the first of two last week to unload a large percentage of sick passengers. Shortly after the Infinity docked, the cruise ship Legend of The Seas arrived with 130 more passengers complaining of similar symptoms. The Legend of the Seas had just finished a two-week long Panama Canal cruise after departing from Ft. Lauterdale, Florida.

It is the responsibility of cruise ship officials to maintain a healthy environment for their passengers. If you have been wrongfully exposed to an illness that may leave you with steep medical expenses and lasting damaging effects, a San Diego personal injury lawyer of Ritter & Associates can help. Family of victim who died in Chrysler Jeep awarded $150M

A jury in Decatur County ruled that Chrysler must pay $150 million to the family of four-year-old Remington Walden, who died when the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee he rode in burst into flames upon being rear-ended in March 2012, the U-T San Diego reported on April 2.

Jurors determined that Chrysler was responsible, as the company acted with disregard to human life by placing the gas tank behind the rear axle of the vehicle. This defective design does not provide sufficient protection around the gas tanks in the event of a rear-end collision, significantly increasing the risk of fire and injury.

A spokesman for Chrysler’s parent company FCA US, Mike Falese, said the company plans to appeal the verdict.

Pursuing a Highway Defects Claim

Highways, conducive to higher speeds and heavier traffic, are particularly dangerous to drivers, and are littered with thousands of severe and even fatal accidents every year. Unfortunately, many of these accidents could have been prevented were it not for negligent errors on the part of construction companies or municipal agencies. These parties are charged with the safety and upkeep of San Diego highways, and when they fail to do their job, the consequences can be substantial.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a car accident caused by a dangerous highway defect, you should not hesitate to pursue legal action. A personal injury attorney of Ritter & Associates can discuss the particulars of your situation with you and help decide on the best course of action to hold the responsible parties accountable for your suffering.

Common Highway Defects

There are countless ways in which a highway can be unreasonably dangerous, but some are more common than others. Some of the most common highway defects to look out for include:

  • Potholes
  • Pooling water
  • Sudden shoulder drop-off
  • Lack of signs
  • Lack of guardrails
  • Objects in roadway

Liability for highway defects can be difficult to prove. Therefore, it is advisable to have a personal injury attorney by your side when pursuing a case like this.

Cloud-based safety technology to be introduced in Volvos

Somewhere on the snow-laden roads of Sweden, Volvo is testing its new cloud-based safety technology. Intended to warn other Volvo drivers of dangerous road conditions, this vehicle-to-vehicle communication system automatically uploads information gathered by vehicle sensors to a Volvo server. Almost instantly, the Volvo server passes that information on to other Volvos in the area that are also equipped with this same technology.

Incorporating data from wheel sensors and the vehicle’s hazard lights, Volvo’s system will use GPS markers to warn other drivers of potentially dangerous road conditions moments after one of its equipped vehicles indicates its presence. While it’s not likely that anyone in San Diego will be so concerned with black ice, this system can help warn drivers of virtually any hazardous condition by simply turning on their hazard lights.

Volvo’s system is tentatively scheduled to roll out sometime in 2016, but there is considerable interest in the automotive industry to build vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems that are far more complex than Volvo’s. Though the advances made in vehicle safety technology are likely to prevent a broad spectrum of accidents, many of these technologies are still somewhere on the horizon.

For the time being, however, our experienced San Diego personal injury lawyers at Ritter & Associates are prepared to help anyone involved in a vehicle accident to recover the damages they sustained in the accident. To discuss your accident with one of our personal injury lawyers, please call our San Diego offices at (619) 296-0123 today.

Mass transit bus has video recording of Malibu fatal wreck

A mass transit bus’ video recording of the fatal four-vehicle Malibu pileup that involved 65-year-old Bruce Jenner could be the key to revealing the sequence of events that happened to cause the deadly crash, sources said on February 17, according to the New York Daily News.

A source that confirmed the police have a copy of the tape further added that even though the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has yet to complete an assessment of said video, they are hopeful that the video’s contents will enlighten them and pinpoint exactly what happened to cause the death of 69-year-old Calabasas, California resident Kim Howe, who was killed in the Pacific Coast Highway incident on February 7.

Entertainment news network TMZ said the video footage came from an MTA bus heading south on Pacific Coast Highway in the opposite direction as Jenner.

The attorneys of Ritter & Associates know too well the damage and pain that a fatal accident can inflict on a victim’s family. If I’ve been offered a settlement, should I accept it?

If you have sustained injuries due to the negligence of another party, you may receive a settlement offer. Although it may be tempting to take the settlement to avoid legal proceedings and put any trauma behind you as quickly as possible, it is inadvisable to do so without consulting with a personal injury attorney. Sometimes, settlements do not sufficiently cover the expenses of the victim. Additionally, they are often offered in cases where it is clear the victim was not at fault for the accident.

If you have been offered a settlement after an accident, a personal injury attorney of Ritter & Associates can discuss the particulars of your case with you and help you establish a plan for moving forward. Call our San Diego offices today at (619) 296-0123.

Bruce Jenner involved in Pacific Coast Highway fatal wreck

Sixty-five-year-old former United States track and field athlete and current television personality William Bruce Jenner was reportedly involved in a multi-car crash that occurred along the Pacific Coast Highway in California on February 7 that resulted in the death of one woman,

A spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told People magazine that the Pacific Coast Highway would be temporarily closed and that traffic was stopped in both directions.

Jenner, driving a blue Cadillac Escalade, was reportedly being chased on the highway by paparazzi when he rear-ended a white Lexus. The unnamed driver of the white Lexus lost control of her vehicle and swerved into traffic, where she was then hit by a Hummer. She was killed in the collision.

According to accounts, Jenner appeared to be uninjured after the wreck. He also allegedly passed a field sobriety test. The New York Post said that eight people were injured in the chain reaction car wreck.

Woman files lawsuit against Foster Farms

West Covina, California resident Ruth Rivera is currently on the process of suing Livingston-based Foster Farms for selling poultry that made her sick, according to latimes.com.

Rivera claimed that she became infected with campylobacter, a bacterium that usually grows inside chicken intestines, after ingesting Foster Farms chicken in December 2011, causing her to develop Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disease that causes numbness of the limbs.

New USDA rules, scheduled to take effect March of this year, seeks to prevent the spread of such illnesses by testing raw chicken parts including breasts, legs, and wings, instead of just the whole chicken as the agency is currently mandating. Failing to examine chicken post-processing can be perilous because salmonella and campylobacter levels can increase when chicken is processed into parts, public health officials said.

If you have been a victim of a manufacturer’s negligent packaging or products, our attorneys at Ritter & Associates can be counted on to help you fight for the financial compensation you deserve. Call our San Diego offices today at (619) 296-0123 to consult with a member of our legal team.
