Worker crushed to death by airport construction material

A 29-year-old construction worker, whom police have yet to identify to the public, was crushed by falling rebar at a rental car center construction site located within walking distance of the San Diego International Airport on May 20, NBC San Diego reported.

The new structure is located at the intersection of Pacific Highway at West Washington Street. An investigation conducted by coroners at the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office showed that the construction worker was climbing the rebar, steel rods with ridges used to reinforce concrete, with the intention of pouring concrete forms. Witnesses said that at around 8:45 a.m., the man was shouting that the rebar was falling, and soon after he fell victim to the weight of the collapsing material. Although co-workers ran to detach him from his safety harness, the man died at the scene.

The construction is for a $223 million rental car center, a project of the Austin/Sundt Joint Venture.

San Diego council okays settlement for child run over by trash truck

On Tuesday, September 24, the San Diego City Council approved an $18.5 million settlement for a personal injury claim filed on behalf of a boy who suffered internal injuries and whose left leg was amputated when a garbage truck slammed onto him in November 2011.

Now an 11-year-old, Luke Acuna was skateboarding in the North Park neighborhood when the incident happened. Acuna’s attorney argued that the truck driver was making an illegal turn on the road where Acuna was playing, which made the driver hit the boy in the first place.

The council gave an affirmative answer to the settlement without making a comment after deliberating the situation during a closed-door meeting.

39 injured in 4th of July celebration at South California park

Thirty-nine people between the ages of 17 months and 78 years – including 12 children – were injured in a Southern California park during this year’s Fourth of July fireworks display.

Of the three victims that remained in the hospital the day after the incident, one required specialist treatment at a burn center in West Hills, while the other two were seen at a community medical center in Simi Valley, according to hospital officials.

Videos taken on cellphones showed fireworks exploding near the ground, with volleys of blasts sending people screaming and running everywhere, and smoke enveloping the crowd of 10,000. A piece of shrapnel made a crater across the street before bouncing and going over trees.

Fire investigators have yet to identify the cause of the explosion. However, Ventura County Fire Captain Mike Lindberry said they are considering witnesses’ statements that a rack of fireworks fell over.

Sadly, the careless actions of other people all too often causes unsuspecting people to be unduly injured, as evidenced by this fireworks incident. At Ritter & Associates, our attorneys work to help victims of such accident obtain the compensation and justice they need. Settlement reached in San Diego trash truck case

The case of 10-year-old Luke Acuna—the child who was struck by a trash truck in November 2011 in North Park—versus the city of San Diego reached a tentative conclusion on Monday, May 20 with an $18.5 million settlement.

The then nine-year-old, who was skateboarding when the trash truck suddenly collided with him, suffered multiple fractures in his body and the loss of a leg due to amputation.

According to the claim filed for Acuna, the driver of the tractor truck made a “dangerous and illegal turn near an elementary school,” thus causing the collision at the intersection of Kansas Street and Meade Avenue. The lawsuit alleged that the city did not adequately train the driver.

San Diego’s representative lawyer Jim Baratta of Irvine said although the city felt that evidence wouldn’t prove the driver was at fault, it also felt that “it was in the best interest of everyone to resolve the case without the trial.”

After being hit by a truck driver, whether due to the driver’s own error or the negligence of his or her trucking company, you may be suffering from both physical and emotional repercussions. In such a situation, our lawyers at Ritter & Associates may be able to help you get compensation for the losses and pain you’ve sustained. Call 619-296-0123 to learn how we can help you.
