The Van Ort Family versus San Diego Sheriff’s Department
When the masked gunman doused Donald Van Ort with lighter fluid and demanded the combination to his safe, he refused knowing his very life depended on it. And the life of his grandmother, 82-year-old Helen Van Ort . It would turn out that the masked man was really a Sheriff’s Deputy who’d come to loot his safe, until another on-duty deputy saved the Van Orts by shooting the masked Sheriff Deputy dead.
That left the Van Orts to pursue justice against the very people in charge of the justice system in an alarming case that involved an extensive internal investigation of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. Over 20 lawyers refused to accept the Van Orts case as having little chance of recovery and too time-consuming. Fortunately, they hired an experienced attorney who could handle the intricacies and formidable forces of the largest law-enforcement agency in San Diego County. Dwight Ritter embraced their case with passion—because their cause was just and they were innocent victims. Several years later, a unanimous San Diego federal jury agreed and awarded $850,000. Regardless of the forces and odds that were against the Van Orts, Dwight Ritter remains proud and honored to have represented these people in their hour of need.
