California Schools Announce Recalled Peanut Butter Will Be Thrown Away

The California Department of Education has announced that they will be destroying all of the peanut butter products that were involved in the Sunland, Inc recall earlier this month.

The peanut butter was distributed to schools in the state after being purchased by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program and the  National School Lunch Program. Officials with the state department have said that no students have reported illness.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall and put a hold on the products on October 5 when the agency began to look into the possible salmonella contamination. Nearly 2,072 cases were recalled as a result and 320 school districts were notified about the contaminated food product.

Once the products were held, the agency then gave the word to get rid of the product and school  officials destroyed them. The recalled product was first thought to just be products from Trader Joe’s, but it was later expanded to include multiple stores as well as other nut products.

Health officials stated that nearly 30 people have become ill in 19 different states from consuming the product. Each of these illnesses has been linked to the Trader Joe’s product, but the other products involved in the recall were made using the same equipment.
