Nine Rigs Involved in Pileup on California Interstate

Two accidents took place Tuesday morning that caused the pileup of nine big rigs on Interstate 5 and caused traffic to back up for hours while crews worked to clear the scene.

According to California Highway Patrol, the accident began when the driver of a dump truck traveling southbound on the roadway lost control just after 2 a.m. causing the initial accident between four big rigs.

Just after the accident occurred, the traffic began to build and five big rigs that were approaching the scene collided as a result. The pileup caused one of the drivers to be trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency crews then rushed to the scene in order to remove the driver from the car and transport him to the hospital.

Officials have stated that the man suffered from “moderate to major” injuries. Officers with the CHP later reported that the man is in stable condition and that no other injuries were reported in the accident.

After both pileups occurred, the truck routes on the highway were closed for hours and all big rigs were instructed to use the main traffic lanes. Police officials were reporting traffic delays in order to give drivers in advanced notice for their morning commute.
